About Adrian Bloom
COMPANY

As president of Blooms Nurseries Ltd. Near Norfolk in England, Adrian Bloom has personally introduced many American gardeners to the unique varieties of perennials for which he and his father, Alan (1906-2005), are internationally known.

He has done this through frequent visits and lectures, as international presenter for the PBS Victory Garden television program, and as an author, and coauthor with his father, of some of the most beautifully illustrated books on gardening. Over the past 10 years, he has also installed five demonstration gardens in public venues and six front yard gardens at homeowner sites. All were designed to promote gardening and to inspire gardeners, while showcasing a wide selection of perennials chosen for creating year-round interest in the garden.

As a businessman and plantsman, Bloom travels the world looking for new plants, promoting the Blooms company and selling Blooms plants worldwide. The plants collected on his travels are assessed in the gardens at Bressingham and in commercial trials in the U.S. and England. From these the best are selected to offer to the gardening public.

For many years, he was involved in the planning and planting of Blooms of Bressingham Chelsea Flower Show exhibits, where Blooms regularly won gold medals.

As a gardener, creating effective plant associations for both small- and large-scale plantings is one of Bloom's passions. In his six-acre garden at Foggy Bottom in Bressingham, Bloom has used conifers widely with other plants and has created many areas applicable to smaller gardens. The garden is known for its display of year-round color. Here you will find one of the largest collections of conifers in the United Kingdom and the UK's National Collection® of Miscanthus, which is spectacular during late summer and autumn. Today he manages The Bressingham Gardens, which have expanded to 16 acres and include his father’s Dell Garden, his Foggy Bottom garden and a new garden opened in 2006 to join the two, which is dedicated to plants of North American origin.

As a writer, Bloom co-authored the widely acclaimed "Blooms of Bressingham Garden Plants" with his father, Alan. The book describes more than 5,000 species and cultivars of hardy garden plants and took more than five years to complete. Bloom also wrote "Adrian Bloom’s Year-Round Garden Glory", which provides planting ideas and plans to create year-round interest in any size garden, and “Gardening with Conifers.” The later is dedicated to his passion for conifers and features practical tips on their care, including a directory of 650 of the best cultivars.

Adrian Bloom holds the Royal Horticultural Society’s coveted Victoria Medal of Honour for service to horticulture. Only 63 people can hold the award at any one time. During Alan Bloom’s lifetime, Alan and Adrian were the only father and son ever to be honored this way at the same time by the society.
