Family and Friends
History and Companion Plants
'Anthea' belongs to a family of plants with supposed,
magical healing qualities. It is said that Achilles,
heroic warrior of the Trojan War, used poultices
of Yarrow to heal wounds of his soldiers. Thus the
origin of Achillea as the genus name.
The pleasant, soothing color of 'Anthea' which was
named after Alan Bloom's daughter, can also serve
as a healer of sorts in garden designs. The soft
yellow flowers are easy to blend in with other flower
colors. The silvery foliage softens bold textures
in the border. Combine with other drought resistant
perennials such as Lavender (try Lavandula 'Blue
Cushion'), Catmint (Nepeta spp.),Pinks (Dianthus spp.) and Globe Thistle (Echinops
ritro). Ornamental
Grasses also contrast nicely with this plant's form.
Delphinium and Shasta Daisy (try Leucanthemum
xsuperbum 'Snowcap' or 'Summer Snowball') are other good companions.
