History and Companion Plants
Bergenia is named for an 18th century botanist,
Karl August von Bergen. Bergenias are known as handsome,
stalwart foliage plants for perennial gardens. 'Bressingham
Ruby' was raised by Alan Bloom and has the most colorful
leaves he has ever seen on a Bergenia.
Plants in this family have broad, oval, leathery
and evergreen leaves which arise from a strong, creeping
rhizome. As a bonus, rosy-pink flowers appear in
spring. Nice companion plants include Bellflower
(try Campanula 'Chettle Charm'), Pinks (Dianthus spp.), Crane's Bill try (Geranium, 'Ann Folkard',
'Ballerina' or 'Laurence Flatman') Aster, Speedwell
(Veronica spp.) and Garden Sage (Salvia spp.) they
can be used with Solomon's Seal (Polygonatum spp.),'Lungwort'
(Pulmonaria spp.) or Hardy Ferns to form an excellent
groundcover.
