History and Companion Plants

Campanulas have been a popular cottage garden plant since at least the 16th century. The famous horticulturist Liberty Hyde Bailey stated that "They are for those who love to grow plants for the joy of growing them." 'Chettle Charm' was discovered in the garden of the historic Chettle House in Dorset, England, and continues the tradition of providing dependable performance for cottage gardens and borders.

The flower spikes harmonize nicely with Yarrow (try Achillea 'Anthea'), Russian Sage (Perovskia atriplicifolia), Bee Balm (Monarda spp.), Crocosmia (try Crocosmia 'Emberglow' or 'Jenny Bloom'), Garden Phlox (try Phlox paniculata 'Eva Cullum' or 'Franz Schubert') and Crane's Bill (try Geranium 'Ann Folkard', 'Ballerina' or 'Laurence Flatman'). They also combine particularly well with Goat's Beard (Aruncus dioicus) and Lady's Mantle (Alchemilla mollis) especially in large display plantings. Shrub and Climbing Roses as well as Clematis are also attractive partners.
