History and Companion Plants
As the common name implies, plants
in this genus closely resemble the popular Sunflower.
In fact another
common name is "False Sunflower". However
plants of Heliopsis are much smaller in habit and
flower earlier than their larger and later cousin.
This makes them more suited for planting in perennial
gardens. The flower size and golden color of ‘Bressingham
Doubloon’ must have excited Blooms’ hybridizers
to the same extent as Spanish explorers finding a
secret stash of gold coins.
Good perennial partners include
Garden Phlox (try Phlox ‘Eva Cullum’ or ‘Franz Schubert’),
Liatris, Purple Coneflower (Echinacea), Garden Mums
(use Yoder Prophets® series), Asters (try Aster Flora’s Delight’), Shasta Daisy (try
Leucanthemum ‘Snowcap’ or ‘Summer
Snowball’) and Spike Speedwell (Veronica). |
