History and Companion Plants
The Torch Lily is also known as Red Hot Poker and
Tritoma, which is the former genus name. Original
varieties in this group sported fiery red and orange
flower heads, which resembled glowing fireplace pokers,
thus the common name. Many of the popular varieties
today come in a wider range of colors yet still have
a glowing quality. Torch Lily seems to be a more
appropriate name for today's varieties.
Torch Lilies stand out as specimen plantings in
sunny gardens. Plant 'Bressingham Comet' in clumps
of three to five plants. They also combine nicely
with Baby's Breath (Gypsophila paniculata), Garden
Phlox (try Phlox paniculata 'Eva Cullum', or 'Franz
Schubert'), Boltonia (Boltonia asteroides), Persian
Catnip (Nepeta mussini), Gaura (Gaura lindheimeri)
and Coral Bells, (try Heuchera 'Bressingham Bronze').
